7 Best Swimming Holes Near Gatlinburg to Beat the Summer Heat (2026 Guide)

A local’s guide to the creeks, pools, and hike-in swimming holes worth the drive this summer — plus a few we’re a little biased about.

If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed in the century since folks started coming to the Smokies for relief from the summer heat, it’s this: the water here is still the coldest, clearest, most refreshing thing you’ll find anywhere in Tennessee. When the mercury climbs into the high 80s in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, locals don’t head for a chlorinated pool — they head for the creek.

We’re a little biased, since our cabins sit right along the water in Cosby, but we get asked constantly by guests: “Where should we actually go swimming while we’re here?” So we pulled together our real local list — the spots worth the drive, the ones that get overcrowded by 11am, and the ones almost nobody else is writing about.

Why the Smokies Are a Swimming Destination, Not Just a Hiking One

Great Smoky Mountains National Park doesn’t have a single official swimming pool or lifeguard-staffed beach — nature did the landscaping instead. Cold mountain streams tumble down from elevations over 6,000 feet, carving out granite pools, natural water slides, and deep swimming holes along the way. Because the park has no life-guarded swimming areas, every one of these spots is a little bit of an adventure — which is exactly what makes them worth seeking out.

The Best Swimming Holes Near Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge

1. The Sinks

Just off Little River Road near Townsend, The Sinks is one of the most photographed (and most visited) spots in the park — and for good reason. Shallow entry water on the western side gives way to a deep pool perfect for cooling off, with a well-known jumping rock for the brave. According to Pigeon Forge’s official visitor guide, the cascades beneath the bridge are dangerous and should be avoided entirely — stick to the calmer pools upstream.

2. Metcalf Bottoms

Halfway between Townsend and Gatlinburg, Metcalf Bottoms is the most family-friendly entry on this list. Shallow, scattered pools along the Little River sit right next to a picnic area with tables and a short walking trail, making it easy to pack a lunch and make a full afternoon of it.

3. Townsend Wye

Where the Middle Prong and West Prong of the Little River meet, the “Wye” turns into a natural water park each summer — small rapids for tubing, a jump-off rock, and several connected pools. It’s free, it’s easy to reach right at the park entrance, and it’s where you’ll see the most local families set up camp with lawn chairs for the day.

4. Greenbrier

Tucked along the Little Pigeon River off Route 321, Greenbrier gets a fraction of the crowds that The Sinks and the Wye see, despite having some of the cleanest, deepest swimming water in the entire park. Wide, flat sunbathing rocks line the banks — bring a book and stay a while.

5. Midnight Hole

This one takes a little more effort, and it’s worth every step. An easy, mostly flat 1.5-mile hike into the Big Creek section of the park near Waterville, NC leads to a natural pool boxed in by huge sandstone boulders, fed by a small waterfall. The water is deep enough to swim in year-round, and clear enough to watch trout swim past your feet from a 10-foot jumping rock. If you only make time for one hike-in swimming hole this trip, make it this one.

6. Mouse Creek Falls

Keep walking about a mile past Midnight Hole on the same Big Creek Trail and you’ll hit Mouse Creek Falls — a smaller, quieter waterfall with its own pool, usually with a fraction of the visitors that stop at Midnight Hole. It’s the reward for the people willing to go just a little farther.

7. Cosby Creek (Right in Our Backyard)

Cosby doesn’t get the same tourist traffic as the Gatlinburg strip, and that’s exactly the appeal. The creek running through this end of the park stays cool and shaded well into the afternoon, with quiet pockets perfect for wading, letting kids splash around, or just soaking your feet after a hike. It’s one of the reasons we built our cabins here in the first place.

A Quick Word on Water Safety

We’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t mention this clearly: the National Park Service is direct about the risks here, noting that drowning is among the leading causes of death in the park, and that help can be hours away. A few rules worth following:

  • Rocks near waterfalls are often coated in algae and spray-slick — many injuries happen from climbing on them, not from the water itself.
  • Mountain water levels can rise fast after storms upstream, even if it’s sunny where you’re standing. If the water looks high or fast, wait it out.
  • If you’re ever swept into moving water, don’t try to stand up — lie back with your feet pointed downstream until you can get to calmer water.
  • There are no lifeguards anywhere in the park, so keep an eye on kids and swim with a buddy.

None of this should scare you off — it should just mean you go in informed, the way locals do.
