Where to Cool Off: A Local’s Guide to Smoky Mountain Swimming Holes Near Cosby

By the middle of August, the creeks around Cosby are doing more work than the air conditioning. If you’ve spent an afternoon on the Foothills Parkway or wandered downtown Gatlinburg in the thick of summer, you know the relief of finding actual cold water — not a pool, not a splash pad, but real mountain water straight off the ridgeline. We get asked constantly by guests where the locals go to cool off, so here’s our honest rundown of the best swimming holes within a short drive of our cabins, along with what you need to know before you get in.

Big Creek and Midnight Hole: worth the drive

This is the one we send people to when they want a real destination, not just a roadside dip. From Cosby, you’ll head out 321 to the Foothills Parkway, pick up I-40 toward Asheville, and take the Waterville Road exit to reach the Big Creek entrance on the park’s northeastern edge. It’s a bit of a haul, but that’s exactly why it stays quieter than spots closer to Gatlinburg.

The trail itself is an old railroad grade, wide and easy, following Big Creek upstream. About 1.4 miles in, you’ll hit Midnight Hole: a deep green pool tucked beneath a short, six-foot cascade, boxed in by boulders the size of trucks. Push on another half mile and you’ll reach Mouse Creek Falls, a 40-plus-foot cascade that tumbles into the creek in tiers. Both are popular, but the walk in keeps the crowds thinner than what you’d find at a pull-off swimming hole.

One thing worth knowing: this area took real damage from flooding in recent years, and trail conditions in the park can change fast after storms. Check the park’s current conditions page before you make the drive out — it’s a long way to go to find a washed-out bridge.

Metcalf Bottoms: the family-friendly option

If you’ve got young kids or just want a lower-key afternoon, Metcalf Bottoms picnic area, roughly midway between Townsend and Gatlinburg on Little River Road, is the easy answer. The Little River spreads out here into a handful of shallow pools, mostly three to four feet deep, with plenty of gravel bar for spreading out towels and coolers. It’s not dramatic scenery, but that’s the point — you can actually keep an eye on everyone at once. There’s also a short walk from the picnic area to the historic Walker Sisters cabin if you want to stretch your legs before or after.

Greenbrier: the quieter local spot

Greenbrier sits just off 321 between Gatlinburg and Cosby, and it’s the one longtime locals tend to keep to themselves. The Little Pigeon River carves out several deep pools here, framed by big flat rocks that make for good sunbathing between dips. Because it doesn’t have the name recognition of Metcalf Bottoms or the Sinks, you’ll often have a pool mostly to yourself on a weekday morning.

The Sinks: the deepest, and the one to respect

Also on Little River Road, the Sinks is the most-visited swimming hole in the park simply because you can see it from your car — no hike required. A 15-foot waterfall drops into what’s considered the deepest swimming hole in the Smokies, formed generations ago when loggers used dynamite to break up a log jam on the river. It’s genuinely beautiful, and genuinely one of the more dangerous spots in the park. The currents near the base of the falls are stronger than they look, and there have been serious injuries and drownings here over the years. If you go, stick to the calmer water west of the bridge and skip the urge to jump from the rocks.

A word on water safety. The National Park Service is direct about this: water recreation isn’t officially recommended anywhere in the park, and drowning is one of the leading causes of death here. There are no lifeguards at any of these spots. River levels can rise fast after a storm miles upstream, even on a sunny afternoon where you are. Don’t dive or jump into water you can’t see the bottom of, watch kids closely, and if you do get swept into moving water, float on your back with your feet pointed downstream rather than trying to stand up. It sounds like overkill until you’ve seen how fast Smoky Mountain creeks can change.

Bring the swimming hole home

Part of why we love this stretch of the mountains is that you don’t always have to get in the car to find water. Several of our cabins sit right on the creek, and a couple were basically named for the feature. Our Swimming Hole Cabin has its own private swimming hole on the property, which is about as close as you can get to the Big Creek experience without the drive. If you’d rather soak than swim, King Pool Cabin has a private pool that stays a lot warmer than anything the park has to offer.

For guests who just want to fall asleep to moving water, Rivers Edge sits right along the water, and both Up the Creek Cabin A and Cozy Creek Cabin back up to their own stretch of creek, close enough to hear it from the porch. After a day of hiking to Midnight Hole or wading at Metcalf Bottoms, there’s something to be said for coming home to more of the same sound, minus the drive.

Planning the trip

Late summer is a good window for this kind of trip — water levels are typically lower and warmer than spring runoff, though that also means the popular spots get busy on weekends. Aim for a weekday morning if you can, pack water shoes (the rocks are slicker than they look), and bring more water than you think you need. The Smokies don’t have a lot of shade once you’re standing in a creek bed.
