Cabin fire pit ringed by Adirondack chairs beneath golden autumn trees in the Smoky Mountains

Early November in the Smokies: What’s Still Open, What’s Closing, and Why It’s Our Favorite Quiet Week

There’s a week every year, usually the first one in November, when the Smokies exhale. The leaf-peeping crowds thin out almost overnight, the campgrounds on our side of the park lock their gates, and the mountains go quiet in a way they haven’t been since April. The color isn’t gone, either. It’s just moved down to where we live.

Early November is our favorite stretch of the whole year to be in Cosby, and it’s also the week guests ask us the most questions about, because so much in the park is changing at once. Here’s what’s open, what’s closing, and how we’d spend a few days.

What’s closing (and when)

The park runs on a seasonal schedule, and the first half of November is when the secondary roads start shutting down. According to the National Park Service’s 2026 seasonal road schedule, here’s the rundown:

  • Heintooga Ridge Road closed October 31.
  • Rich Mountain Road and Parson Branch Road (the one-way back roads out of Cades Cove) close November 9.
  • Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road), Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and Little Greenbrier Road stay open through November 29, weather permitting.
  • Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road and Cades Cove Loop Road are open year-round, subject to snow and ice closures.

Cosby Campground, our neighborhood’s front door into the park, is a seasonal campground that closes at the end of October, so the hiker parking area gets noticeably emptier the first week of November. The picnic area and trails stay open; you just park at the gate and walk in a little farther.

Translation: if Kuwohi or Roaring Fork is on your list, you’ve got until Thanksgiving weekend. If you want to drive the Cades Cove back roads, this is the last weekend.

What’s still worth doing

Low-elevation color

While the high country is bare by now, the Gatlinburg CVB’s fall color guide notes that lower-elevation color often lasts through the first week of November and can stretch to mid-month if the weather cooperates. Oaks turn last, in deep russets and bronzes that don’t photograph as loud as the maples but look wonderful in low afternoon light. The Cosby valley, the Foothills Parkway overlooks and the Gatlinburg Trail along the river are all at their best right now.

Empty trails

This is the week to hike things you’d never attempt in October. Alum Cave to the Bluffs, which the CVB recommends for late October and early November, has parking again. Hen Wallow Falls, from the Cosby picnic area, is a 4.3-mile round trip under big hemlocks and bare hardwoods with the falls running fuller after fall rains. And the Appalachian Trail along the state line is cold, clear and nearly deserted.

Wildlife

Bears are in hyperphagia, eating around the clock before denning, so sightings along Little River Road and in Cades Cove are common in early November. The park asks visitors to stay at least 50 yards from bears and elk and to keep food locked up. Over in Cataloochee, the elk rut is winding down, but the herd is still in the fields at dawn and dusk.

Veterans Day

November 11 has traditionally been a fee-free day across the national parks, and in past years the Smokies have waived the parking tag requirement on that date. Check the park’s fees page before you go, but if it holds, it’s a nice excuse for a midweek drive.

Weather reality check: early November in Cosby is typically highs in the 50s and 60s, lows in the 30s, with the first hard frosts of the year. Up at Newfound Gap it can be 20 degrees colder, and the first snow of the season is not unusual. Pack layers, a warm hat and real rain gear, and keep an eye on the park’s road alerts if a front is coming through.

The first lights come on

The other reason we love this week is that the holiday season starts early here. Gatlinburg’s Winter Magic lights, a tradition for more than 30 years according to the Gatlinburg CVB, begin going up in early November, and in Pigeon Forge the Christmas Never Ends drive-through light show at the fairgrounds opens November 1, per PigeonForge.com. So you can hike in fall color in the morning and drive through Christmas lights after dinner, which is a combination you only get for about two weeks a year. We’ll have a full guide to the lights season next week.

How we’d spend three days

Day one: sleep in, then drive Foothills Parkway East from Cosby to I-40 for the late-color overlooks. Lunch in Newport. Afternoon at the cabin with the fire going.

Day two: early start for Kuwohi Road and the Newfound Gap overlooks before it closes for the season. Pack a lunch; the visitor center up top is open but the crowds are gone. Back through Gatlinburg for the first Winter Magic displays after dark.

Day three: Hen Wallow Falls in the morning, then nothing. That’s the point of November.

Cabins built for the quiet season

Early November is when a fireplace, a hot tub and a creek outside the window stop being nice-to-haves and start being the whole trip. These are the cabins we’d pick.

Cozy Creek Cabin beside a clear mountain creek surrounded by trees

Cozy Creek Cabin

Creek sound, a wood stove, and a short drive to the Cosby trailheads. Our quiet-season favorite.

Down the Creek Cabin B

Tucked into the woods right on the water, where November mornings come with frost on the rocks.

Swimming Hole Cabin perched above a boulder-filled creek in the forest

Swimming Hole Cabin

The swimming hole is for July. In November it’s the sound of the creek and the view from the porch.

Mountain Rest

A fire pit in the woods and nowhere to be. Built for the season when the park goes quiet.
